Associated Species

These beetles show up each year in late June on the Eriogonum heracleoides (Parsnipflower Buckwheat) flowers. The males, who are black in color, arrive first, looking for females, with their fancy, four-spotted, red elytra. When the females arrive, the males quickly find them, and the fun begins.

Female Male

Here is a pair on the buckwheat flowers. Notice the translucent tube-like thing protruding from the male's abdomen. That is the aedeagus -- the insect equivalent of penis.
